Where it started
Southport
Thomas Paul Fleetwood was born on 19 January 1991 in Southport, a coastal town in the north west of England renowned as a popular golfing area. As a child he used to sneak on to the course at Royal Birkdale with his father, and almost two decades later, in 2017, he made the cut there in The Open.
Tommy first took up the game at his local municipal course before showing promise as a junior at Formby Hall under the tutelage of Norman Marshall. He went on to enjoy a decorated amateur career, finishing runner-up in the 2008 Amateur Championship and representing Great Britain & Ireland in the 2009 Walker Cup before turning professional the following year.
